The genus once contained over 100 species. These are now placed in the related genera Callicore, Catacore, Paulogramma, Diaethria and Perisama. This is for technical reasons. Boisduval ignored the generic names of previous authors but was widely followed. Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin used the name Catagramma in the Biologia Centrali Americana, establishing it for later authors. All of the Catagramma butterflies in the plate shown below are properly placed in Callicore, under the previously used generic name.
Catagramma is, technically, a junior subjective synonym. The type species of Catagramma is Catagramma hydaspes Boisduval, presently placed in the genus Callicore as a probable synonym of Callicore pygas (Godart, ).
