Chiasognathus granti Real Framed Charles Darwin's Beetle Archival Conservation Insect Display
| Frame Size 6.5" Square
Charles Darwin the author of Origin of Species made reference to this beetle the Chiasognathus granti in his two volume book set Descent of Man 1871 (illustrated and shown in the photo in this 1st edition set). Charles Darwin came across this species on his travels in South America. He noted the extremely long and fierce looking mandibles on this male beetle. He observed that when the beetle was approached and threatened it would turn on his enemy and open his large mandibles and make a loud noise. He further observed that when he put his finger between the mandibles of this fierce looking beetle the beetle did not have the strength to even pinch his finger. He concluded that the mandibles on this beetle were purely ornamental to scare of opponents in battle.
